Dan Mann's Performance Groveler

The Spun Honey is a Dan Mann design developed as a refined, higher-performance evolution of the Spitfire concept. Firewire positions it as a user-friendly groveler with a large sweet spot, combining the easy speed and wave-catching characteristics surfers want in smaller everyday waves with a more responsive approach to turns and transitions.

Within Dan Mann's range, the Spun Honey sits between the easy-going Sweet Potato and the more performance-focused Dominator 2.0. That makes it an interesting choice for surfers who want help generating speed in weaker surf without moving all the way toward a dedicated small-wave cruiser.

6'4 x 21 3/4 x 2 7/8 – 44.4 Liters

This 6'4 Spun Honey measures 6'4" x 21 3/4" x 2 7/8" with 44.4 liters of volume. The generous width and volume provide plenty of foam under the surfer, while the design uses a stepped rail to keep the rails more sensitive than the center volume might suggest.

For surfers looking for a higher-volume shortboard, this size provides substantial flotation without requiring the length of a mid-length. Surfboard sizing should still take into account surfer weight, ability, fitness, typical waves, and desired feel rather than relying on volume alone.

Diamond Tail for Responsive Pivots

A defining feature of the Spun Honey is its diamond tail. The relatively wide tail provides useful planing area for generating speed, while the diamond's single release point is designed to help the board pivot and redirect without making the wide tail feel overly loose.

Firewire describes the result as a combination of snappy pivot, bite, and smooth release, particularly useful when transitioning quickly from one turn to the next.

Single-to-Double Concave Bottom

Underneath, Dan Mann uses a pronounced double concave set within a single concave. The double extends farther forward than on many conventional shortboards and is designed to contribute speed, lift, and smooth rail-to-rail transitions.

The board also carries significant foam through the center and under the chest while maintaining more refined rails. This allows the Spun Honey to combine useful paddle support and flotation with a rail profile intended to remain responsive through turns.

Made for Everyday Waves

The Spun Honey is primarily designed as a performance groveler for small, weak, everyday surf. Its wide planing area, concentrated volume, and bottom contours are intended to help create speed when the wave is not providing much power.

Firewire also notes that its team has successfully pushed the model into larger, hollower surf, giving the Spun Honey a broader range than a purely dedicated small-wave board.

Futures Thruster / Quad Setup

This Spun Honey features five Futures fin boxes, allowing it to be configured as either a thruster or quad. The five-fin layout gives surfers the ability to experiment with the board's feel and tune the setup around personal preference and conditions.

Fins are not included with this surfboard, so compatible Futures fins will need to be supplied separately.

Firewire Helium Construction

The Spun Honey is built using Firewire's Helium technology. This construction uses a stringerless EPS core with rail materials engineered to manage flex, producing a lightweight and lively board designed to generate speed in everyday surf.
