The Channel Islands Dumpster Diver 2 5'9 Spine-Tek EPS surfboard is a modernized take on Dane Reynolds' original Dumpster Diver, designed to bring compact performance into a broader range of everyday surf conditions. At 5'9" x 19 3/4" x 2 1/2" with 30.8 liters of volume, this DD2 combines a wider nose and tail, increased rocker, and a refined single concave with Channel Islands' lightweight Spine-Tek EPS/Epoxy construction. This board is set up as a Futures thruster for surfers looking for speed, control, and responsive shortboard performance.

How the Dumpster Diver 2 Rides

The Dumpster Diver 2 builds on one of Channel Islands' best-known compact performance designs. Compared with the original Dumpster Diver, the DD2 features a wider nose and tail, more nose and tail rocker, and a more subtle single concave. Channel Islands developed these changes to give the board a broader operating range while maintaining the lively performance character that made the original so popular.

The compact 5'9" length keeps the board easy to maneuver, while the 19 3/4" width and 30.8L of volume give this particular size enough foam to provide useful flotation without turning it into an oversized shortboard. The result is a strong option for surfers who want a performance-oriented board for the type of everyday sessions where a traditional high-performance shortboard can feel unnecessarily demanding.

Spine-Tek EPS/Epoxy Construction

This Dumpster Diver 2 uses Channel Islands' Spine-Tek EPS/Epoxy construction. Spine-Tek replaces a traditional timber stringer with a lightweight engineered fiberglass-and-resin spine designed to flex under load and return toward the board's natural rocker. The goal is a lively, responsive flex pattern that stores and releases energy through turns.

Paired with an EPS core and epoxy construction, Spine-Tek gives this version of the DD2 a different flex and feel than the traditional PU version while retaining the Dumpster Diver 2's proven outline and bottom design.

Futures Thruster Fin Setup

This 5'9" Dumpster Diver 2 uses a three-fin Futures thruster setup. A thruster configuration provides a familiar blend of drive, control, and predictable turning, making it a natural match for a performance-oriented shortboard like the DD2.

Who Is the 5'9 Dumpster Diver 2 For?

The Dumpster Diver 2 is aimed at surfers who want a compact, performance-focused shortboard that can cover a wider range of conditions than a highly specialized competition-style board. This 5'9" size carries 30.8 liters, making it worth considering for surfers who want a balance between usable flotation and responsive rail-to-rail surfing.

Surfboard volume is only one part of choosing the right size. Your weight, ability, fitness, typical waves, and the boards you currently ride should all be considered when deciding whether 30.8L is the right volume for you.
