Rob Machado's Midlength Evolution of the Machadocado
Rob Machado developed the Xtra Cado by stretching the Machadocado concept into a longer, straighter midlength outline. The result is a board with plenty of glide and flotation that makes catching waves and carrying speed easier while retaining performance characteristics for surfers who still want to turn hard.
A semi-rounded nose flows into a smooth, wide squash tail, creating an outline designed to provide stability, speed, and smooth transitions through longer turns.
Easy Glide with Responsive Rails
The Xtra Cado carries generous foam through the center of the board with a domed deck, helping provide paddle power and effortless glide. Machado then pulls the rails down and keeps them relatively thin, allowing the board to engage the wave face and respond more like a performance-oriented surfboard.
This combination gives the Xtra Cado a user-friendly feel without sacrificing maneuverability. It can draw smooth, extended lines down the face while remaining responsive enough for tighter turns in the pocket.
Single-to-Double Concave Bottom
The bottom features a deep single concave that transitions quickly into double concave with vee through the back of the board. This combination helps create lift and speed while allowing the Xtra Cado to roll smoothly from rail to rail.
The result is a midlength that feels fast and easy to surf while still providing the responsiveness needed for more aggressive direction changes.
Thin, Wide Squash Tail
One of the defining features of the Xtra Cado is its wide squash tail. Although the tail carries plenty of width, it is foiled relatively thin through the rails. This helps provide speed and stability while keeping the tail sensitive and responsive when turning.
Versatile 5-Fin Setup
The Xtra Cado features a Futures 5-fin configuration, allowing surfers to experiment with multiple setups depending on conditions and personal preference. Ride it as a thruster for controlled, responsive surfing or as a quad when you're looking for additional speed and drive.
Firewire Helium Construction
The Xtra Cado is built using Firewire Helium Core with Fiberglass Lamination. Helium technology utilizes a lightweight stringerless EPS core with wood rail components designed to manage flex. The result is a light and lively board that generates speed efficiently in everyday waves.
Ideal Wave Conditions
The Xtra Cado was designed with smaller and weaker everyday waves in mind, where its generous volume, straighter outline, and glide help surfers get into waves early and maintain momentum through soft sections. It is especially well suited to approximately 1–3 foot and 3–5 foot surf.
Its pulled-down rails, responsive tail, five-fin configuration, and performance-oriented bottom contours also give the Xtra Cado enough control to handle larger and more powerful conditions, making it a surprisingly versatile addition to the quiver.
Who Should Ride the Firewire Xtra Cado?
The 6'6" Xtra Cado is a great choice for intermediate through advanced surfers who want the glide and paddle power of a midlength without giving up responsive turning performance. It can also appeal to surfers looking for an easier alternative to a traditional shortboard or anyone who wants to maximize fun when the waves are softer and less powerful.
