Firewire Spun Honey 5'8" Surfboard by Dan Mann

The Firewire Spun Honey 5'8" Surfboard, designed by Dan Mann, is a refined high-performance groveler built to generate speed, stay responsive, and make everyday surf more exciting. Based on the proven Spitfire platform, the Spun Honey combines a compact outline, performance-oriented rails, a diamond tail, and powerful concave contours to create a board that feels fast and forgiving while still letting experienced surfers push hard through turns.

At 5'8" x 20 3/8" x 2 1/2" with 32.5 liters of volume, this Spun Honey packs plenty of foam into a maneuverable package. Firewire positions the model between the easy-going Sweet Potato and the more performance-focused Dominator 2.0, making it an excellent choice for surfers who want small-wave speed without giving up responsive, performance-minded surfing.

Firewire Spun Honey Performance

The Spun Honey was developed around Dan Mann's popular Spitfire design, but refined for modern, progressive surfing. Its short, compact outline places the wide point slightly behind center while keeping it farther forward than the Sweet Potato. The result is a generous sweet spot that helps the board generate speed while retaining the responsiveness needed for quick transitions and tighter surfing in the pocket.

Firewire designed the Spun Honey primarily for small, weak, and gutless waves, particularly the fast-changing walls and punchy peaks commonly found at beach breaks. Despite its groveler roots, Firewire reports that its team has also successfully pushed the board into head-high and overhead hollow surf, giving the design considerably more range than a traditional small-wave board.

Fast Single-to-Double Concave Bottom

An aggressive double concave is set within a pronounced single concave and extends farther toward the nose than on many conventional shortboards. This bottom contour is designed to produce speed, lift, and fluid rail-to-rail transitions, helping the Spun Honey accelerate through weaker sections while maintaining a lively feel when the wave offers opportunities for harder turns.

Diamond Tail for Quick, Responsive Turns

The tapered diamond tail gives the Spun Honey a defined release point despite the relatively wide planing area through the tail. This helps create quick pivots, added bite, and smooth release through turns. The design lets surfers take advantage of the speed and stability of a wider-tailed groveler without making the board feel excessively loose or difficult to control.

Step Rails Hide Volume Where You Want It

Dan Mann's step-rail concept allows the Spun Honey to carry useful foam through the center and under the chest while maintaining thinner, more sensitive rails. That combination provides extra paddle power and speed generation while allowing the rail to engage more like a performance shortboard. It's a key reason the Spun Honey can feel forgiving underfoot without sacrificing responsiveness.

Firewire Helium Construction

The Spun Honey uses Firewire Helium Core Technology, featuring a lightweight EPS core with flex controlled along the rails using Paulownia and Balsa wood components and Firewire's deckskin construction. The result is a light, lively board designed to react quickly underfoot and generate speed efficiently in everyday conditions.

Ideal Wave Size

The Firewire Spun Honey shines when the surf lacks power but you still want to surf progressively. It is especially well suited to 1-3 foot and 3-5 foot surf, including weak beach breaks, punchy peaks, soft walls, and everyday conditions where effortless speed generation matters. Its expanded performance range can also make it useful when conditions become larger and more powerful.

Recommended Skill Level

The Spun Honey's generous sweet spot and forgiving speed make it approachable, but its design is geared primarily toward intermediate to advanced surfers looking for a performance groveler. Surfers who already know how to generate speed, engage the rail, and perform directional turns will get the most from its combination of volume, acceleration, and responsive handling.

Futures 5-Fin Versatility

A Futures Tri/Quad 5-fin setup gives surfers the option of riding the Spun Honey as either a traditional thruster or a quad. A thruster setup is a strong choice when control and predictable turning are the priority, while a quad can maximize speed and drive in smaller or weaker surf. Firewire also offers a dedicated Dan Mann Spun Honey fin template designed specifically around the characteristics of this shape.

Why Choose the Firewire Spun Honey?

The Spun Honey fills the sweet spot between a dedicated groveler and a conventional performance shortboard. It provides the speed and forgiveness needed to make mediocre surf fun while retaining enough sensitivity and control for aggressive turns, quick direction changes, shorebreak barrels, and aerial surfing. If you want one board that encourages performance when the waves aren't perfect, the Spun Honey deserves a place in the everyday quiver.
