Lost Step Driver
The Lost Step Driver is Matt Biolos’ step-up evolution of the legendary Driver lineage. Built directly off the Driver 2.0 and Driver 3.0, the Step Driver keeps the familiar, high-performance feel of the Driver series but adds the rocker, control, and confidence needed for fast, powerful, overhead surf.
When your daily shortboard starts to feel overmatched — late drops, fast sections, thicker lips, stronger waves — this is the board that lets you hold your line, carve hard, and commit with confidence.
Who Is the Lost Step Driver For?
- Intermediate to advanced surfers who need a step-up for bigger, more powerful surf.
- Driver/Driver 2.0/Driver 3.0 riders who want the same general feel, but tuned for serious waves.
- Surfers taking trips to Mexico, Hawaii, Indonesia, or anywhere with faster, hollow surf.
- Anyone who wants more hold, drive, & control than their daily shortboard can provide.
Lost Step Driver Design Features
Performance Step-Up Outline (Driver DNA)
Designed as a continuation of the Driver series:
- Narrower template than the Driver 3.0 for better hold at speed.
- More refined tail and rail lines for increased sensitivity in powerful pockets.
- Still maintains the familiar “Driver” feeling — just sharpened and reinforced for heavier surf.
Increased Rocker for Powerful Waves
- More entry rocker for steep, late drops.
- More tail rocker allowing tighter arcs and control when pushing hard off the bottom.
- Smooth rocker blend prevents catching, bogging, or skipping during high-speed transitions.
Bottom Contours
- Single concave under the chest for paddling lift and down-the-line speed.
- Deepened double concave between the fins for bite, hold, and control.
- Slight vee in the tail for rail-to-rail smoothness even in fast, choppy water.
Rails & Foil
- Lower, more precise rails than the everyday Driver models.
- Foil thinned through the tail for control and sensitivity.
- Volume balanced to preserve enough paddle power without feeling corky.
Fin Setup
Built primarily as a thruster for maximum control. Some stock Step Drivers feature a 5-fin setup for quad versatility on fast, hollow walls.
Ideal Wave Conditions for the Step Driver
- Head-high to double overhead surf.
- Reef breaks with powerful walls.
- Punchy beach breaks with steep drops.
- Point breaks when the swell gets extra strong.
This is the board you pull out when the forecast jumps and you want to surf aggressively, not cautiously.
What Size Lost Step Driver Should You Ride?
- Same length or +1–2 inches compared to your Driver 3.0.
- Similar volume unless you want more paddle power for travel (then +2–4 liters).
- If you normally ride a groveler or hybrid, think of this as your “trusty weapon” when it’s pumping.
