Firewire Neutrino

The Firewire Neutrino is Tomo’s latest Modern Planing Hull (MPH) and performance hybrid, built in I-Bolic 2.0 technology. Designed by Daniel Thomson, it’s a small-wave speed machine that blends ultra-low drag, high lift, and Tomo’s ultra-parallel rail lines into a compact, fast, and highly efficient shape for weaker surf.

Inspired by the original Nano (one of Tomo’s first Quad-Inside-Single-Concave MPH designs), the Neutrino is made to create speed when the wave energy is low, while still feeling sharp, skatey, and performance-oriented under your feet.

What Makes the Neutrino Different?

Chop Tail – Ultra Low-Drag Release

The Neutrino uses a wide chop tail—one of the lowest-drag tail designs you can make. Water releases cleanly and symmetrically off the squared chop angle, which:

  • Reduces drag for high top-end speed.
  • Makes it ideal in small waves where you need the board to generate its own speed.
  • Keeps the tail feeling free and fast, while still having enough edge to bite in turns.

Quad-Inside-Single-Concave Modern Planing Hull

Tomo’s Quad-Inside-Single-Concave bottom contours are a core part of the Neutrino:

  • They give the board lift and help it ride high on the water’s surface.
  • Reduce drag by letting the board skim across the boundary layer of water more efficiently.
  • Translate directly into more speed, more of the time, especially in gutless surf.

Ultra-Parallel Rail Template

The Neutrino carries Tomo’s signature ultra-parallel rail lines:

  • Let you size the board shorter while still maintaining plenty of functional rail line.
  • Increase planing efficiency for fast, down-the-line surfing.
  • Give the board a “skateboard for the ocean” feel—short, fast, and very responsive.

Balanced Nose for Paddling & Low Swing Weight

  • The nose keeps enough area up front to paddle well and catch waves early.
  • Reduced length and refined nose shape keep the swing weight low, so you can hit the lip and redirect without feeling any extra “weight” in the nose.

I-Bolic 2.0 Construction

Built in I-Bolic 2.0, the Neutrino uses an engineered core layout that:

  • Controls flex for a lively yet predictable feel.
  • Improves strength and durability for everyday use.
  • Pairs perfectly with Tomo’s high-speed, low-drag design philosophy.

Fin Setup

For best results, Tomo/Firewire recommend:

  • Firewire Velox fin set as a thruster – for the highest level of performance and control.
  • Slater Designs Endorfins Twin + 2 – for more speed and looseness when conditions are small and gutless.

Note: this is a thruster or “twin + 2” style setup, not a longboard-style 2+1. Twin + trailer language is reserved for boards like this; 2+1 is used only for boards with a longboard center box plus sidebites (e.g. midlengths / longboards).

Ideal Wave Conditions

  • Small to small/medium surf – especially knee- to shoulder-high, weaker waves.
  • Beach breaks and soft points where you need the board to generate speed rather than just manage it.
  • Days when a standard shortboard feels sluggish, but you still want to surf with a performance mindset.

Who Is the Neutrino For?

  • Surfers who love Tomo’s MPH designs and want his latest small-wave shape.
  • Intermediate and advanced surfers who want a fast, short, skatey board for weaker surf.
  • Riders who like to surf tight in the pocket, go top-to-bottom, and link fast, on-rail turns in small waves.

Sizing the Firewire Neutrino

Thanks to its parallel rails and planing efficiency, you can ride the Neutrino shorter than a traditional shortboard:

  • Performance-focused surfers: go shorter than your normal shortboard at a similar volume.
  • Everyday surfers: match or slightly increase your usual liters for a bit more forgiveness.
  • Coming from a midlength/funboard: keep volume comfortably high but enjoy the much shorter rail line and skatey feel.

If you’d like help dialing in volume and size, share your height, weight, and skill level and we’ll walk you through options.

Firewire Neutrino FAQ

What is the Neutrino?

The Neutrino is Daniel Thomson’s latest Modern Planing Hull performance hybrid for small waves, featuring a chop tail, ultra-parallel rails, and a Quad-Inside-Single-Concave bottom for high speed and low drag.

Is the Neutrino a groveler?

It definitely grovels well in weak surf, but it’s better described as a small-wave performance hybrid. It’s meant to be surfed aggressively, not just cruised.

What fin setup does Tomo recommend?

Pair the Neutrino with Firewire Velox fins as a thruster for maximum performance, and use Slater Designs Endorfins Twin + 2 for extra speed and looseness in very small, gutless conditions.

What wave range is the Neutrino best in?

It’s built for small to small/medium waves, especially weaker surf where you need the board to generate its own speed.

How short can I go on the Neutrino?

Thanks to the ultra-parallel rail lines, many surfers ride it shorter than their normal shortboard at similar or slightly higher volume, depending on skill and preference.
